Demonstration of Swiss military capabilities
Engineer units of the Swiss army building bridges.
Swiss Army engineer units intervened in the town of Bumbach to help the population after heavy storms. Up to 60 soldiers built a “Mabey” bridge mesuring 39.62metres spanning the Emme river. The Mabey Bridge has thirteen bays, weighs 39 tons with a width of 4.2 metres. Two pedestrian bridges 26 m long were also built in nearby Eggiwil.
Since the 14th of May 2014 the Swiss Army has a new support bridge. It was designed to replace the old system “Fixed bridge 69″ now obsolete. Sixteen hardware deck modules and twenty-four vehicle laying modules were acquired for 259 million Swiss francs ($ 287 million).
