The French Rafale fighter jet is actively promoted in Qatar.
The French Rafale fighter jet from Dassault Aviation is actively promoted in Qatar. Their acquisition was one of the themes during negotiations pendant the official visit in France and with the French President Francois Holland on June 23, 2014 by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamin Ben Hamid Al-Thani. Several contracts were signed between Qatar and France and the dossiers Rafale are one of the principal subjects under discussion.
The Qatari Air Force, actually equipped with about a dozen Mirage 2000-5’s, need to renew their base. Up to 72 fighter jets could be ordered, 36 being optional. After three test phases the Rafale is the jet best suited to Qatar’s needs. The other contenders are the European Eurofighter Typhoon and the American F-15. The Rafale has obtained excellent results during operational deployment in Afghanistan, Mali and notably in Libya.
